Car crashes can lead to serious injuries or even death, so it’s important to remember that you are never alone when you’re in the car.
In fact, a car crash can be a life-saving tool.
With that in mind, car makers are offering female-only vehicles to help protect women from accidents, and it’s not just carmakers that are doing so.
The American Automobile Association has issued a voluntary recall of the 2019 Honda Fit, the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Toyota Sienna, and Chevrolet Trax to improve safety in women’s cars.
“As we get closer to 2020, we must be ready to take every step we can to make our roads safer for everyone,” A.A.A., a trade group for the auto industry, said in a statement.
“We must take more steps to make roads safer, including adding more safety features that are not already in place.”
The recall is a voluntary program for the 2019 model year, which is the last year for the Fit, Corolla and Focus, the latest vehicles sold by Honda.
The A.M.A.’s statement said the vehicles will not be available in North America until further notice.
A spokeswoman for Toyota said in an email that Toyota has “no plans” to discontinue the Fit and Corolla.
The Toyota spokeswoman said the company “is focused on our shared goal of reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries, which are the top three safety concerns in our marketplace.”
The spokeswoman did not provide any additional information about the recall.
The 2017 Honda Fit and the 2017 Toyota Corollas were among the models affected by the A.R.A.-mandated recall, which was announced on May 30, 2017.
In the meantime, a driver in a car with a female passenger could be injured or killed, because the driver could not see the woman, the A,A.R., said.
The vehicle was recalled because it “was not adequately gender-neutral, could not detect whether the vehicle was male or female, or could not properly identify the driver as female.”
If the driver does not remove the woman’s clothing or a mask to check if the vehicle is male or woman, “there is no reason to believe the vehicle would not be equipped with a gender-inclusion system,” the A.,A.T. said.
A driver could also be killed or seriously injured if the car was not equipped with an emergency braking system, the group said.
That could cause “significant injury or death.”
Female-only cars are a big step forward, but the automotive industry needs to make more of them.
In 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that about 1.6 million people were killed in vehicle crashes each year in the U.S., including 7,000 in 2017.
That was more than triple the total number of people killed in car crashes during the same year in 2016.
The number of deaths in vehicle accidents has been increasing, though, and a 2017 report by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators found that male-only models accounted for about 3% of the vehicle-crash deaths in the country in 2016 and about 9% in 2017, up from about 1% in 2014.
A.T.’s voluntary car recall is just one of many in the industry that are looking to improve driver safety.
In 2015, Ford released the F-150 Ranger, the first of a new generation of pickup trucks that offer a female-friendly design.
The pickup was designed to help women navigate cities by offering female passengers more space and a better chance to park safely.
But the truck did not meet all safety standards and is not currently in production.
The safety improvements were not enough to attract women to the F‑150.
In 2017, Ford began selling the F–100 Raptor, the only truck in the segment that is now equipped with female-specific safety features.
The Raptor was also designed to be more appealing to women because it was designed with female passengers in mind.
Ford plans to introduce the F‐100 Raptore, the company’s first female-instrumented vehicle, in 2019.
The new Raptore will be equipped on the F100, but it will not carry passengers.
Ford is also making the F80, a pickup that is available with female seats and a seatbelt.
Ford says it will make more women-only pickups, including the Fords upcoming pickup, the F200, which will be available later this year.
