Woman wearing shoes at a women’s football team event sparked a debate about what it means to be a woman in a modern-day society that still considers wearing heels to be unacceptable.
The AFL has announced that it will have a new uniform for its female teams to wear in their inaugural season.
The new uniform will feature a different look to the ones worn by the Melbourne Storm in 2017.
“The new uniform is designed to highlight the fact that women have a long way to go in the game,” said AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan.
The Storm have been one of the AFL’s biggest sponsors, and they will be sporting a new jumper in their debut season.
The game has had a long history of featuring women in the top 10.
In the early days, women played for the clubs.
But then AFL players were excluded from the sport because of its gender inequality.
The changes are being welcomed by AFL women, who say they want to be seen in public wearing the correct clothing.
“It’s something we’re excited about,” said Victoria AFL player Lucy Grewal.
“I think we want to show the world that we’re in our element.”
We’re just trying to get better and better.
